Principles of percutaneous kyphoplasty
Percutaneous kyphoplasty involves the use of image-guided techniques to treat spinal compression fractures. A percutaneous puncture is made through the compressed vertebrae to create a pathway for the procedure. A special balloon, usually about 15 millimeters in size, is then inserted into the center of the vertebra and inflated with contrast material. This expansion helps restore the height of the vertebrae by providing support to the collapsed area. Once the desired height is achieved, the balloon is removed and bone cement is injected into the surgically created cavity. This helps stabilize the fractured vertebra and relieve pain. The surgery aims to correct kyphosis, restore vertebral height, stabilize fractures, and improve the patient's quality of life.
